AVID Sophomore College Fair **
Part 1- Preparation for the College Fair
1. Contact admissions or Student Outreach Offices (see letter handout) (DUE Friday, Sep. 9)
As a group you need to decide how to contact your college. Most colleges will take a while to respond. You must contact them early...yes months… and most likely a couple of times. Get the name and phone number for anyone you are in contact with. Be prepared with questions and the information you need when you call.
Professionally written letters to your group’s college, Print e-mails and correspondence written to and from your group’s college, typed notes of your phone conversations with your college’s outreach staff.
2. Bring the poster board, stand up kind ASAP. Write your names on the back.
3. Decide what you are doing about shirts. Making, Buying?
4. Decide if you will visit the school if it is local.
5. Will you have give away for the fair? Candies, pencils, booklets.
6. Start researching all the information required for the binder and the board. You need to be knowledgeable about your school for the college fair. You will also want to put a lot of this information on your board. We will come around and quiz you on the day of the fair.
7. You also need to make contact with a freshmen at your campus to ask them some questions (either on the phone, Skype, e-mail, Facebook, etc.). This is part of your research paper, so begin this NOW!
Part 2- The College Fair (200 points) (Tuesday, October 25)
Fair Day Requirements – (Board MUST be completed by Wednesday, October 19)
o Poster Board of Information about your school
School name with appropriate colors
Mascot
Picture of the school
Campus location. Show a map from Montclair, CA to your college.
School size (population and demographic break down of students in attendance)
SAT and GPA requirements
Most popular majors
Cost of attendance (tuition, room/board, supplies)
Activities on campus
Any other information to highlight campus life
Web address
o Brochures, Campus Facts Handout, Applications, General Handouts for your school
o Give-Away (pens, pencils, shirts, flyers, key chains, candy) –split supplies between lunches
o Table cover, display materials, tape (it might be windy)
o NO CONFETTI/ Streamers- they make too much of a mess
o Balloons (not required)
q Extra Credit (For going above and beyond)
o Get a college representative to come assist you at the fair.
o If you get free t-shirts and banners to display
o Other stuff…check with me
Part 3- College Binder (200 points) Due Friday, October 28
Cover Page
Create a cover page with the following information, creatively/professionally displayed: Name, address, phone numbers, website, etc.
College Information
Pertinent information for your college – this should be the same information that you have displayed on your board, but put in an outline/easy to read manner for quick reference. (Suggestions-Campus high lights, admission requirements, admission rates, student population, gender breakdown, majors, graduate school, popular majors, surrounding community information, pros and cons, mascot, school colors)
Cost, Financial Aid and Scholarships
Cost of school in state, out of state, on and off campus
Information on their financial aid packages( ask a senior 4 a copy of theirs{cross out name} or call the financial aid office at the school.)
Find out information for at least 3 scholarships offered by the school and have all the information to apply for it.
ACT/SAT/SAT II/ Entrance Exams
Test required for that school
Scores needed for admissions
Map
Print a map and directions for your school’s location and distance from MHS.
Brochures/catalogs
You need to have at least one brochure/catalogue from the school. Extra credit for getting a copy of their newspaper. (Call and see if they will send you one.)
Acceptance Letter
Ask an AVID senior for their admission letter (cross out name) – this should show an example for what a college acceptance letter looks like. (It does not have to be to your college, but just an example of what one looks like.) (Bonus points if you can find a senior letter that is from your school. Ask Ms. Warner in room 112.)
Correspondence to and from your college
(These are notes of phone calls, scripts, e-mails, letters, etc. that you have sent to your college. This will include your letter that you wrote and the e-mail that you sent and all replies. This is documentation of ANY time that you make contact with the college.)
Reflection and Evaluation Section
Each should be at least a half page. Reflection on the entire process. Evaluation of yourself and group members, who did what and what grade they deserved. What worked what didn’t…
Pictures from college fair
You should have at least 10 pictures from the college faire and the process of preparing. You need to have one comment/reflection/label for each picture.
Part 4 - College Research Writing (200 points) Due Friday, October 14
This is a research paper of the college your group chose. All information must be presented in research paper format. Each group member should type at least ½ page of information about the school. Include a works cited page in MLA Format.
o Quick Introduction to your school (1 paragraph)
o A Day in the Life of a Typical Freshmen (4 paragraphs)
a. Focus on schedule of classes, working, living, social life – try to contact 2 students or call the university outreach program or office of admissions.
o Surrounding Community (2 paragraphs)
o What Graduates Leave With (2 paragraphs)
b. Focus on: Majors, Graduation statistics, famous alumni, graduation statistics, typical jobs graduates go into and the percentage, what most people are doing one year after graduation
o How to Prepare for Admission (3 paragraphs)
c. Focus on:
i. 9-12 grade requirements and suggestions
ii. Admission requirements
o Top 10 Reasons to Attend
d. Focus on:
i. Start with #10 and count-down to best one
ii. Justify your college
iii. Give links to more info.
Requirements:
*Typed
*12 point font, Ariel or Times New Roman, 1 inch margins
*Write each piece under the given headings (think of this as several mini-papers)
*Use correct MLA format (look in the back of your Literature book, in the “R” pages)
*Put all names on the front page and all last names on the rest of the paper in the header.
*Proof Read
*Write academically
*Ask for help early
